Too Busy Blogging for Cocoa!

Article published in Caring 4 Sussex Magazine – Jan 09

The days when getting old meant that you retired to the armchair with a newspaper or you whiled away your days watching television are well and truly over! Today, older people are just as inclined as the younger generation are to enjoy whiling away many an hour or so surfing the Web and even engaging in activities such as abseiling, canoeing, salsa and Pilates. What is more, many of the so-called silver surfers are leading the way when it comes to blogging! They are giving the youngsters a run for their money with blogs that are (heaven forbid!) interesting, engaging and brilliantly written – neither a spelling mistake nor a clumsily worded paragraph in sight!

A very interesting poll done by Ipsos backs this up, pointing to a slow but significant trend towards older individuals taking up blogging. For example, there are examples of groups of seniors blogging from old age homes and from the privacy of their own homes. And, according to the survey, You Tube is a popular blog spot with everyone. In a European poll of 2200 Web surfers in five European countries including Britain, a staggering 11% of those between the ages of 55 and 64 read blogs and forums which is not far from the overall average of 17%. The head of Ipsos’s technology division believes that older surfers are taking to blogging because, “blogs take time to read, and old people often have that time, and they are more alone.”

Could it be that in a few years time, blogging will have taken the place of the Times crossword? Probably not but, it’s fair to say that as more people come up to retirement, they will be replacing their work computer with a laptop and as sure as eggs is eggs, some of their leisure time will be spent exploring everything that the worldwide Web has to offer. In particular, they will be looking at how they can engage with other like-minded people using its power. If you are interested in starting a blog, go to www.wordpress.co.uk where you can set one up for free and once you start blogging, make sure to let everyone know, especially your grandchildren. Give those youngsters a run for their money!
